Spring Quarter 2016:

As we move into our 2016 Spring Quarter, we have several events that will keep us all engaged in the important conversations regarding social justice on our campus and beyond. Please be sure to check in with us through the quarter to be notified of upcoming events.

 

Social Justice Initiative’s Closing Events:

As the Social Justice Initiative is coming to a close, we want to extend a warm invitation to our final two events!  These will occur successively on Thursday, May 19th & Friday, May 20th:

 

Thursday, May 19th, 2016 from 6:00-7:30pm

The first will be a book presentation, reading, and signing of Entre Guadalupe Y Malinche: Tejanas in Literature and Art by Dr. Inés Hernández-Ávila, alongside Dr. Margo Tamez and Dorotea Reyna on Thursday, May 19th:

“Mexican and Mexican American women have written about Texas and their lives in the state since colonial times. Edited by fellow Tejanas Inés Hernández-Ávila and Norma Elia Cantú, Entre Guadalupe y Malinche gathers, for the first time, a representative body of work about the lives and experiences of women who identify as Tejanas in both the literary and visual arts” (University of Texas Press).

Light refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase!

 

Friday, May 20th, 2016 from 9am-4:30pm

The second event will feature two keynote speakers.  Dr. Margo Tamez is a poet and core strategist of one of the leading Indigenous law cases against the U.S. border wall, Tamez v. Michael Chertoff.  She is an enrolled citizen of the Lipan Apache Band of Texas and an Assistant Professor in the Indigenous Studies Program, at the University of British Columbia.  Dr. Rosa-Linda Fregoso is a Research Professor (Professor Emeritus) of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz.  Her writing focuses on human rights, gender and sexual violence, media and visual arts, race and cultural politics in the Américas.

Lunch will be provided and the day will continue with a panel discussion, “Social Justice: Scholarship and Practices in Chicana and Chicano Studies” with faculty from the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UC Davis.  The event will conclude with a showing and discussion of Una Vida, Dos Paises:

“In the last five years one million Mexicans residing in the US have returned to Mexico, including children and youth who were born or raised in the US. Una Vida, Dos Países presents the stories of these transborder youth, highlighting their experiences living between two countries, cultures, languages and education systems, and exploring their parents’ decisions to return to their home country after living undocumented in the US.”
